nah.. it was just on the top of my head this morning as this guy needed some help in the forums.. we’ve all been there, but he kinda trolled it and eventually gave up with what he was trying to do. I think that social media has the same etiquette as any other interactions, and that for the most part, everything is more transparent than we may think. I just try to be nice and help where I can, so that the favor may one day return to me.

  • http://pro.gigaom.com/ there’s a ton of them out there. In order to have the look and feel of a highly customized site, you’ll need to build a highly customized theme.

thank u, very well put. I also come from the journalism/publishing side of things and spent my days as corporate code monkey. Right now.. all them fools are trying to tap into facebook since hitwise reported last week that more inbound links are coming from facebook than google news. I tried to tell them this years ago, long before the downsizing and chapter 11’s started going down.. but Noooo, ”code monkey don’t know what he’s talking about, we can’t give our news to facebook”. I’m working on buddypress because I believe that niche social publishing is the future. ’Life’ feeds so to speak where you decide what ’channels’ to subscribe to in real time. I also dabble with real time stuff (pubsubhubub, superfeedr) and the xml outputs or a buddypress install can gloriously be fed in real time to other networks. So.. I envision small networks of specialized interests groups (bp) where folks will be able to pick and choose interest channels with ’modern’ platform agnostic feed readers.. be it on your tv or mobile device… etc etc etc.. dinner time. :)

Mike, calm down :p … link bait is right! – maybe one a day, you don’t see anyone else selling thier ’wares’ here, and I think you’d be surprised how intelligent the general public can be when it comes to purchasing themes and plugins. folks like studio press, graph paper, & crowd favorite really, really, really know their stuff and they provide a good product and great support. Please, Please no offense intended, but i’m a straightforward guy and you might be better cut out for a marketing guy than a coder, a bunch of us around these parts coulda whipped that child theme up in under 15 mins and I also noticed there was no unsubscribe from the email I received earlier today? I admire your go get em attitude though and I wish you well with the BuddyPack(tm). Perhaps a good model for you to follow is SAS, but you have to be ready to provide top notch support for your themes. (where once again ”the things you own will end up owning you) But it’s obvious that you are driven to succeed and that’s all it takes… so keep on keepin on.

just when you think you’re smart..
why does someone else always come along and make it look 10x easier?
i was digging into all kinds of other functions, but just a simple
    function_exists woulda cut it.

I think anyone who adds value (ie.. your stuff) to an open source project are to be commended, be it for personal gain or otherwise as that expands general interest in inevitably expands the forum and contributor base of the project.. which in turn.. leads to a better project.. So keep on keeping one.. I signed up, and I’m looking forward to testing. ”The stuff you own end up owning you” is true though.. even gamerZ said this week he can no longer support his free wp plugins.

I just now thought about it since you mentioned it. I think it’s possible to to add a custom header to /groups/single/home.php as long as you retain the bp specific header stuff. As far as creating individual template files for different groups.. I’m not exactly sure, not ’out of the box’ so to speak, but it’s possible with enough custom php work… you could create new page templates for your theme and then ’hard code’ that template page to display that particular group, which would give you control of the nav, content on that page.
