Do the forums on BP not have associated RSS feeds now?

  • Del posted a new activity comment:   2 weeks, 2 days ago · View

Wondering if this is the same problem I’m having with buddypress group twitter? Every twitter feed is duplicated. Perhaps it’s something with RSS feeds?

In reply to - jamie marsland posted an update: Testing @apeatling updated external blogs plugin at http://bonkyboo.co.uk/groups/the-document-group/ . Getting lots of duplicate content. Anyone else getting this? · View

I got this yesterday – someone sent me a friend request on here, and the notification in the admin bar is still showing ’1’ but there’s no friend request. I’m guessing they deleted their account here.

In reply to - Mike posted an update: hmmm… might have to test this on dev installation, but when deleting someone who’s requested you as a friend, the friend Notification box — if you didn’t accept/deny it — doesn’t go away on the admin bar. anybody else get this, too? · View

@andy Using Buddypress Group Twitter and tweets are showing up twice in the group activity – any ideas?

@andy We just upgraded to RC2. If I click a link to the Photography group from the site feed, it still shows just two entries from me, and one from me belonging to another group. However if I go to ’my groups’ and click to the Photography group from there, it shows all appropriate content relating to the group, but also shows entries from two other groups. Exactly. They have viral marketing and a bigger-than-life ’brand name’, but what they’re doing is nothing new. Social networking exists in many iterations across the web and it’s only the person who can shout the loudest who’ll get the most users. Open source projects like buddypress offer much more attractive features, customer service and community care being two of the most appealing – but people will flock to the big name like sheep.

wouldnt say its all about ”sheep,” but i do think that i want to be at a place where i can be in contact with the most people i know… social networking is all about ”niches”.. in this case these big organizations focus on you as the niche focusing on niches… in smaller sites its about you focusing on a particular niche… ie common interests, diseases, cars, sports etc… thats how the big ones will always be the primary, that and they have millions/billions of $’s to spend on it(development/advertising)… here is a post i made on neowin.net about the announcement of googles ”buzz” (also showing a pro stance on google doing this):

”the way to make this big is if google can integrate well with facebook and twitter… more so facebook because everyone has it… and getting all of the people who were never into computers i can say that facebook was one of the main reasons those people started to check out the computer, then become glued to Fb, then become bored with it but hold on to it to keep in touch with all their friends and family.. its going to be hard to get my older extended family/parents to get them to use another social product(not matter how weird it is that they are on FB in the first place).. ”hey you should join this..” family – ”i can barely use facebook..” hope it works out tho.. i am pretty much google everything…”

Oh, I don’t think it’s a huge leap to get from ’he’s full of it’ and hinting at the possibility of him being a hacker to full-blown name-calling. ;) His choice of marketing was to pique interest and get people intrigued. Looks like he’s done fine with that. Don’t like it? Ignore it, move along. As for checking whether he’s a spammer or not – if you’ve visited his website and poked around on his profile then you’ll have seen his portfolio and AvenueK9; blatantly not spam sites. He’s just a guy with some skill at marketing and coding, trying to do something helpful. I can’t imagine it’s doing much to his motivation when he sees someone, instead of outright coming to the point with ’Look, I’m checking up on Andy’s behalf that you’re not actually a spammer – can you fill me in with what this is all about?’, decides to broach the subject with ”it’s link bait. We’re supposed to sign up because of some snazzy graphics and a promise of greatness? Pass”. A bit more harsh than was really necessary.

Because I messaged him and asked. I would have thought that was the sensible approach – if you want to know something, ask a direct question. I don’t imagine anyone would have signed up to something if they felt uncomfortable with not knowing what it was, but for those who did want to know, I would like to think that they had the sense to message Mike and ask him, if they were intrigued enough by his images to bother finding out. And as I’ve said previously, if people were getting fed up of seeing his images, they could simply block them and carry on, no harm done and certainly no need for throwing your toys out of the pram.

Thank you – it was deserving :P

In two places on Mike’s original thread that Brent and yourself commented on (http://testbp.org/activity/p/64961/), he says:

”I have the guinnea pig question on there, because I’d really like to produce themes that speak to the vast majority. The only way I can do that is by getting a focus group together, or ”guinnea pigs,” who’ll suggest improvements to whatever I come up with.”

”been thinking lately as to how i’ll roll out B2, since i don’t want this theme pack to own me, ha!”

Having also seen the first few images MIke posted and finding myself intrigued and wondering, I PM’d Mike and asked him what B2 was all about. He responded and kindly told me that he’s putting together, as said above, a theme pack. Now if you’d only thought to ask him yourself instead of getting irate at his method of marketing, you would doubtlessly have received the same answer, would therefore not have needed to flame him on his own product, and we’d all be none the wiser that you’re name is rather fitting :P

Well, you were eager enough to start having a go at Mike without even waiting for him to answer Brent. If you’d shown an iota more patience you’d have had your answer when Mike logged on and saw the question – but I guess since manners aren’t your thing, it’s a bit too much to ask for patience too. Talking of someone being ’full of it’ – they say the qualities we hate most in others are those that remind us of ourselves. :)

You really are a hater, aren’t you? He answered your question, told you and everybody else what it’s about, and still you’re dishing out insults and going so far as to insinuate he’s a hacker. I’m starting to think the only possible reason behind this absurd behaviour (aside from downright childishness) is jealousy. So Mike came up with a good idea that will benefit the buddypress community and he’s doing a good job of marketing it – what is there not to approve of? If you don’t want to see the images he’s posting, block them; problem solved. There’s no need to inflict your petulant vitriol on us.

Make sure you are getting the updated adminbar.css in the default. Not sure if you have replaced this with a custom version?

@andy Bit of an update – if I log out, it shows full group activity as it should. It’s only when I log in that it seems to filter the group activity to only show my own, and even then, not all of it.

Gotta love the cynicism here, Pratt (and the irony). I take it you haven’t actually asked Mike what BuddyPack is all about? I’m wondering if you’ve even followed the link and browsed his site; if you had, you’d see that he’s not entirely short of skill and anything he puts out will probably be worth signing up for.

Not running the latest trunk, will upgrade later and see if that makes a difference. Currently running RC1. After clearing cache and cookies, I open the site (efx3.com), click ’my groups’, click on any link to the ’Photography’ group (which was created on Friday after upgrading to 1.2RC), and the only activity it shows is me creating the group, and directly beneath, it shows the latest entry from the older group ’Books’, and nothing else. I see the same thing if I go to the main Groups tab and click Photography. If I go to Groups and click ’Books’, all I see is the date I joined the group. If I click on the group ’Movies’, I see my latest activity, my join date, and then beneath those, one random entry by me from the ’Tech Support’ group. I click on the ’Delicious’ group and it shows three of my activity stream entries and then the creation date of the group.

All of these groups have activity from other members as recently as within the past week. If I log out of my regular username and log in as admin, I don’t see any activity in the groups (”Sorry, there was no activity found. Please try a different filter.”) aside from the creation date of any groups I created as admin. There are no filters selected.

We’ll update to the latest trunk later and I’ll let you know if it changes anything.
