Is BuddyPress for Me? Is it any better than Ning?
I am inclined to BuddyPress, but I have to be fully convinced that there are reasons to dump Ning.
any suggestions??

An interesting question. It depends on who you want to have control of your membership details and also if you want to integrate it into anything else. I was really excited about buddypress to start with, but after a lot of experimentation, have discovered that users find it VERY difficult to understand and use. I am now using a elgg with much better user results. Maybe this new version of buddypress will be better.
I think 1.2 is worth looking into again. The usability has significantly improved with this new theme.
I agree, however, it’s not just the theme, that makes it difficult for users. The functionality of elgg is way more elegant, with richer features. I was keen on buddypress because of the integration with wordpress (for CMS purposes) However, with the old version at least, the inegration between wordpress and buddypress features and content was very confusing. However, ellgg lacks the cms component!
1.2 isn’t that problematic. My users are okay with the interface. ELG wasn’t up to my standards concerning graphics/theming. Looks quite ugly in my opinion (!). I’ve always loved the way you can theme wordpress/BP.
BP is more like Facebook. Most people know how to navigate facebook. So…
