it can be modified via a child theme
but i dunno, this wide makes it more on par with a regular site rather than a blog site.
i think it draws attention and makes it less busy/cluttered
i actually made a theme that’s 960px wide and about 3 replies down for a comment, the content starts to get too slim, so i actually prefer the big width, too. like @glowstixx said, you can always create a child theme by following these set of instructables … http://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
