It’s lacking photos, but that could be a limitation of having to set up a test package. Now if a scholarly society were to adopt this as the backend for their website, they’d have a de facto community with a common interest ready to use it. I’m not sure if that would be a good or bad thing.
To me it feels more like NingInABox rather than FBInABox, but http://testbp.org does give an aggregated lifestream. I don’t much like the way blogging is separated off.

Your on-site blogging will appear in your stream if the blog is fully public, including open to Google.
So if I set is as public but not open to Google, it doesn’t appear here. That’s confusing.
