Waterway Watch
Public Group active 2 years, 2 months agoGreat Britain has a unique 4,000 mile network of inland waterways, 2,200 miles of which are canals. Most of these canals were built around 200 years ago and feature thousands of the original locks, bridges, aqueducts, etc. The waterways are populated by over 60,000 cruising boats most of them equipped for comfortable holiday travel for several people.
Since 2006, this important national heritage has suffered from a series of Government funding cuts to the extent that only 85% of required maintenance has been possible. As a result there is a current maintenance backlog in excess of £100 million and this neglect is beginning to show. Given the current economic climate and the prospect of further cuts, it won’t be long before really serious deterioration will begin to show and navigation authorities need help from waterway communities to stem the rot from spreading.
Waterway Watch is an initiative designed to encourage and guide the formation of community groups along the waterways. Each new community Watch this is formed will be able to create their own group to record their progress, recruit supporters and share ideas with other Watches.
The initiative is launched by the first group, the Alrewas Waterway Watch which is located on the Trent & Mersey Canal in Staffordshire.
