Theme Changes & Deprecations Protest Group

Public Group active 2 years, 3 months ago

I’m really bummed about the new theme system changes and deprecations, and am making a group to see if others might feel same way enough to perhaps get things changed some.

While the new functionality is wonderful, a lot of the other changes seem really bad or confusing:

1) The old default theme / theme system is reportedly not planned to get all of the new functionality going forward, so if you are building on that one, you’ve likely just been like cut out of future BuddyPress enhancements unless you change to the new theme
2) The new theme doesn’t have a matching blogs option

and other concerns:

3) This is the second theme system revamp in about the past 6 months, which makes development difficult for us non-theme-designers
4) Lots of changes and deprecations aren’t marked on the roadmap that I’ve seen, making designing customized versions tricky to do. (ie the new @replies system and the deprecation of the wire system).

So I’m kind of bummed that the project as it was before (a standalone social network) seems like it is being marked for extinction in preference of a system designed for sitting on top of big MPMU installations like WordPress.com.

Anybody else think things are getting near prohibitively complex to follow? Please feel free to join if so, or post whatever opinions / corrections to here.

Other critiques of the new theme: 1)iit doesn’t have much horizontal space for additional profile modules, 2) it has a right-side navigation that is pointless on most pages, 3) it doesn’t have a matching blog theme by default, 4) the home page only has one sidebar and the activity area has a lot of unused space (that one at least seems easy to change)

modemlooper posted a new activity comment: %s You can choose to use the blog as a front page and then in the admin >> reading choose a static page and then create anything to your hearts content for a front page. Add as many sidebars as you want.

As for the blog theme. I think the main focus of BP is the social side of things. You can easily…[Read more]

modemlooper posted a new activity comment: %s If you hold out a bit I’m sure you will see a ton of themes and hacks rolling in for 1.2. I am creating a child theme for the default theme that has a few front page options that I’ll give out. I was waiting for the beta release to finalize it.

modemlooper posted a new activity comment: %s Yup. Its 100 x easier now to customize a theme. Expect a ton of themes to be made soon. Especially since BP now works on regular WP. Pretty much anyone who currently has a WP blog can use BP not with a few clicks.

On the roadmap, I’ve learned there are weekly IRC meetings — following those might make following the roadmap part easier.

On the classic theme system, I think there should be kept up to date with all of the latest updates the new default theme system gets, or that the theme should be abstracted, and the bp-classic theme updated to that…[Read more]
