I am hoping to create a site where users can create their own mini web site where they can blog, add photos and get comments. Is BP the way to go?

That’s what I want too, I want maximum user participation and user content. Also map integration because i am planning a walking site. It really needs to be easy for users to register, uploasd theirt pictures, review accommodation and restaurants, discuss the routes etc.

Don’t yet know what WordPressMU is, going to find it now

    Looked quickly for MU

Don’t know what Deb’s requirements are but MU is something to do with ‘multi-site’ networks. Is that linking different sites ? what I want is for users to post pictures, reports, ad to maps, whatever.

The “MU” jargon is mostly retired and “multi-site” has replaced it.

There are some architectural decisions that need to happen regarding how media is uploaded through BuddyPress and where/how it gets incorporated in WordPress’s media area. Right now BuddyPress defers the media uploading to third party plugins to handle. We have some ideas on what we’d like to see, but nothing planned for the immediate future.
